synopsis

Taylor and Rose have been best friends since the first day of high school, and they’re ready to tie the knot. They enter into a new societally accepted contract: a “friendship marriage” to guarantee them a plus one for life. They dismiss the legal advisor’s warning that they cannot enter a romantic contract while in a friendship marriage, pledging that this will always be their most important relationship.

Together, they navigate Taylor’s new teaching job, Rose’s acceptance into grad school, and a break-up. However, as Rose focuses more on school and Taylor meets Andrew, they start to drift apart, as evidenced by their annual Thanksgiving dinners hosted by Taylor’s mom Diana. While Taylor vows to stay in her friendship marriage with Rose, tensions continue to mount at her partnership celebration with Andrew until things hit a boiling point at their high school reunion, and Rose files for a “friend divorce.”

In friend divorce court, Taylor and Rose’s lawyers each present their case: how their client was a supportive friend and how the other took the friendship for granted. The proceedings culminate in differing memories around Taylor’s bachelorette party and partnership celebration to Andrew, ultimately ending in the dissolution of the friend marriage.

The next couple of years, Rose and Taylor experience big life events apart—Rose gets a new job, a book deal, and a new friend marriage, while Taylor directs her first high school musical and celebrates Diana’s cancer remission and an official marriage to Andrew. When Rose learns of Taylor's mom’s death on social media, she races to the memorial, where she and Taylor share a tender moment together, acknowledging their shared history even if their future paths no longer align.
